What Is Behind the Veil? Explaining Near-Death Experiences
"We are born into this life knowing only love, and when we leave this life, we return to that love..."
Merry Morning & Moon Sweet Friends,
Following last week's gentle look at the Afterlife, we are diving deeper into one of the most fascinating aspects of human mortality: The Near-Death Experience, or NDE.
While the GREAT question -Is there life after death?- remains a mystery for many, those who have momentarily crossed the threshold bring back consistent, profound reports from the other side. Today, we are exploring the surprising patterns that unite these experiences and looking at the continuous dance between science and spirit.
What is an NDE? Core Patterns of the Threshold
A Near-Death Experience is a profound, subjective event typically reported by individuals who have come close to death, or have been temporarily declared clinically dead (e.g., during cardiac arrest). Though every journey is uniquely individual, these experiences follow surprisingly consistent patterns that challenge our understanding of consciousness.
1. Out-of-Body Sensation (OBE)
One of the most frequent reports is the distinct feeling of separating from the physical body. Individuals often describe this as observing their surroundings, such as a hospital emergency room, from a detached, external, and often elevated perspective. During an OBE, a person’s center of consciousness detaches from the vessel, allowing them to perceive the world clearly despite being medically unconscious.
2. The Void and the Tunnel
Seekers often describe moving through a serene, dark, and void-like space, sometimes likened to a tunnel or a transitional hallway, frequently moving directly towards a brilliant, radiant light.
3. A Mystical Light and Higher Beings
This phase involves encountering a brilliant, typically warm, and unconditionally loving light that is often associated with a divine presence or universal source. Many also report joyful meetings with deceased loved ones, spiritual guides, or religious figures who offer deep reassurance, comfort, and sometimes direct guidance on the soul's journey.
Scientific vs. Spiritual Perspectives
The origin of Near-Death Experiences remains a beautiful, ongoing debate, bridging clinical neurology with parapsychology.
The Neuroscience View: The Dying Brain
Many scientists and neurologists attribute NDEs to a brain that is actively dying or is under immense physiological stress. Studies of cardiac arrest patients have documented massive surges in gamma-wave activity, which is associated with peak states of consciousness, just moments before death. Other clinical theories suggest these sensations are the result of hypoxia (oxygen deprivation), the sudden release of endorphins, or specific activation in the brain's temporal lobe.
The Parapsychology View: Continued Consciousness
Alternatively, researchers (such as those at the University of Virginia's Division of Perceptual Studies) study what are called “Veridical NDE’s.” These are cases where patients report verifiable details of their immediate surroundings or complex conversations that occurred while they were flatlined (displaying no heart rate or brainwave activity) and which they should not have been able to perceive clinically. These profound cases fundamentally challenge the traditional mind-brain model.
The Impact of the Threshold: For the vast majority of people, an NDE is an intensely positive, transformative experience. Survivors often report a complete loss of the fear of death, a greater sense of purpose, heightened empathy, and a deepened belief in a connection to a larger universal consciousness.
A Lifelong Curiosity and the Death Card
As you know, the afterlife is a subject that fascinates me deeply. In my quest to understand what comes next, I have read many books, including the remarkable neurosurgeon's journey Proof of Heaven, by Dr. Eben Alexander, and watched compelling documentaries that explore these phenomena. If you share this curiosity, I highly recommend exploring Netflix’s series Surviving Death and the feature film After Death. Both beautifully synthesize personal testimonies with rigorous scientific research.
In my upcoming Practical Magick Tarot Deck, the Death Card has been designed to reflect this very concept of positive, "calid" transition. It is not an ending to be feared, but a threshold, a sacred shift into a larger, more loving state of being.

Next Week in the Sanctuary
Join me next Wednesday at 6:00 PM Pacific Time as we sit beside three individuals who have experienced an NDE. Although they are from different walks of life, different religious backgrounds, and separate spiritual beliefs, their stories are deeply connected, revealing the beautiful commonalities of the final journey.
Blessings & Love, Sweet Friends… Sending Uplifting Energy Your Way.
Be well and stay enchanted,
