Celebrate Your Beautiful Life Often: The Gift of a Living Funeral

MERRY MORNING & MOON, Sweet Friends,
I have always been a fierce believer in celebrating our lives every single chance we get. As we all know, time moves swiftly, and this physical life can pass by in the blink of an eye. Yet, every dawn brings a new beginning and a beautiful reason to rejoice.
Think of how we honor life's thresholds: we celebrate the anticipation of a new baby with showers, and we joyfully mark that miraculous day every year after with birthdays. So, let me ask you a gentle question: Why shouldn't we celebrate the sacred transition of leaving this life, too?
Today, we are stepping onto a path of radical joy and deep comfort as we discuss planning a Living Funeral and designing a personalized Celebration of Life.
Redefining How We Gather: What is a Living Funeral?
Traditionally, the funerals we attend take place after a friend or loved one has already crossed the threshold into eternal rest. Whether built around strict religious traditions or structured as non-religious memorial gatherings, these spaces are designed for the living to mourn, grieve, and remember.
As an end-of-life death doula, my purpose is never to alter your religious framework, personal beliefs, or ancestral traditions. Instead, my calling is to walk beside you as a supportive partner—helping you organize, plan, and actively participate in your own end-of-life journey.
And that brings us to a beautiful alternative: The Living Funeral.
A Living Funeral is an intentional gathering, a celebration, or even a vibrant party thrown while you are still here to enjoy the company of those you hold dear. It is a profound opportunity to:
Design Your Space: Choose the music, the decor, the scents, and the atmosphere that truly reflect your soul.
Share Real-Time Memories: Listen to the stories, the laughter, and the expressions of gratitude from your friends and family firsthand.
Create Lasting Anchors: Take photographs, share embraces, and hand out your personalized legacy tokens while you can look your loved ones in the eyes.
While I have sat vigil at many traditional thresholds, I have already decided that when my time comes—provided it isn't sudden—I will absolutely embrace my transition with a magnificent, once-in-a-lifetime gathering filled with music, dancing, and shared storytelling.

The Two Pillars of End-of-Life Preparation
Preparing for our final transition shouldn't be rooted in fear; it should be an extension of living well. True end-of-life planning is split into two beautiful acts:
1. Living to the Fullest
The absolute first step of preparation is waking up every day committed to tasting life, practicing gratitude, and radiating love to those around you.
2. Designing Your Threshold Navigation
Just as we thoughtfully prepare legal wills or organize insurance, deciding how you want to physically and spiritually navigate your final months is a gift of peace to your family. As your doula, I am here to help you coordinate:
The Living Funeral: A customized celebration of presence hosted during your life.
The Post-Passing Memorial: A sacred, comforting service designed to anchor your family's grief in love after you cross over.
Traditional Alignment: Ensuring your exact personal, spiritual, or religious rites are protected and carried out flawlessly.
Ultimately, the most important thing is for each of us to leave this realm wrapped in love and gratitude, leaving our friends with timeless mementos that will comfort them for the rest of their days.
