The Journey of the Fool: Exploring the History and Soul of Tarot

Merry Morning & Moon Sweet Friends,
In our last chat, we talked about how I view the Tarot as a storytelling tool. Today, I want to take you deeper into the roots of that story. To understand where we are going with the cards, it helps to know where they began and the beautiful, metaphorical path they lay out for us: The Fool’s Journey.
The Fascinating History of Tarot
While many believe the cards have always been mystical, the history of Tarot actually begins with entertainment. The cards originated in Northern Italy during the 1430s as a trick-taking game called carte da trionfi (triumph cards) for elite families.
These original 78-card decks, like the famous Visconti-Sforza deck, combined traditional suits with allegorical "trump" cards. It wasn't until the 18th century that French occultists began attributing mystical significance to the cards, transforming them from parlor games into tools for divination.
The modern Tarot we know today was revolutionized in 1909 by the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, which was the first to illustrate all 78 cards with rich, esoteric imagery. Today, we use these cards not just for fortune-telling but as a powerful mirror for psychological introspection and spiritual guidance.
What is the Fool’s Journey?
The Fool’s Journey is a metaphorical tale representing the human life cycle through the 22 Major Arcana cards. It begins with The Fool (0), representing pure, innocent potential, and ends with The World (21), representing completion and integration.
As the Fool travels through the deck, they encounter archetypes that teach vital life lessons:
The Start (Cards 0-2): The Fool begins with nothing but potential, guided by the Magician’s outward skill and the High Priestess’s inward intuition.
The Personal (Cards 3-7): Here, the Fool engages with society. They learn from the Empress (nurturing) and the Emperor (structure), while exploring belief systems through the Hierophant, making choices with the Lovers, and finding focus through the Chariot.
Crisis & Growth (Cards 8-14): This is the "soul-searching" phase. The Fool develops Strength, seeks solitude with the Hermit, faces the Wheel of Fortune, and learns the power of Death (transformation) and Temperance (balance).
The Climax (Cards 15-21): In the final stretch, the Fool faces their shadow (The Devil and The Tower) before finding hope in the Star and Sun, reaching a final Judgement, and finding wholeness in the World.
A Personal Threshold: My First Deck
Many moons ago, I was navigating some heavy shadow aspects in my own life. I was seeking validation and searching for positive solutions. I decided to purchase my very first Tarot deck, and that was the true beginning of the Moonwind Fairy journey.
By learning to tell stories with the cards, I discovered so much about myself and the people around me. The Tarot became my roadmap for handling life’s inevitable ups and downs. It taught me that every "crisis" is simply a chapter leading toward growth.
