The Tarot Card Story: Chapter Five – The Hanged Man, Death, and Temperance

Today, we step into the most transformative and profound quadrant of The Tarot Card Story. Having learned to establish structure, choose our path, and master our inner world, our Fool now encounters the deeper mysteries of existence. Chapter 5 is where the soul truly learns the alchemy of transition; how to pause, how to surrender, and how to bloom anew.
Over the coming weeks, we will travel through the 22 milestones of the Major Arcana, exploring three cards each week to see how they weave into a single, beautiful narrative. Once our journey through the Major Arcana is complete, we will step into the Minor Arcana to unlock the elemental secrets of the Wands, Cups, Swords, and Pentacles.
This series is deeply close to my heart because I will be guiding you using preliminary, "not-quite-finished" glimpses of my very own creation: The Practical Magick Tarot Deck by Moonwind Fairy.
To make this deck uniquely magical, I am using the faces of my own loved ones as the archetypes. The artistic style blends a realistic Celtic era with whimsical, enchanting elements. As we look at each card, we will explore its High Energy (its positive attributes and gifts) and its Low Energy (the difficult aspects needing healing or awareness).
The Concept: The Journey of the Fool
At its heart, the Tarot is the story of The Journey of the Fool, a metaphorical tapestry representing the entire human life cycle. Beginning with the complete innocence of the Fool (0) and culminating with the integration of the World (21), this journey shows us how we encounter archetypes, learn vital life lessons, and evolve our souls.

🎨 Card 12: The Hanged Man
The Hanged Man symbolizes a momentary, intentional pause. He is not a figure of physical punishment, but rather the voluntary choice to view life from a completely new perspective. He is the sacred act of surrender and the profound wisdom found in letting go.
High Energy: Deep letting go, surrendering to the divine will of the cosmos, embracing the new, serene patience, and spiritual enlightenment.
Low Energy: Painful stagnation, self-sabotage, stubborn resistance, paralyzing uncertainty, and unnecessary sacrifice.
The Medicine: When The Hanged Man arrives in a reading, the universe advises you to pause, release your grip on control, and surrender to the present moment. True wisdom often comes from simply changing your point of view. It is an invitation to accept a temporary halt instead of fighting against the current.
The Hanged Man’s Mantra: "I pause the world, release my control, and surrender my soul to divine perspective."
🎨 Card 13: Death
Despite its alarming name, the Death card rarely, if ever, signals a physical demise in a reading. Instead, it is the ultimate symbol of profound transformation, major inner transition, and the absolutely necessary ending of an old phase to create the vital space for a magnificent new beginning.
High Energy: Endings of cycles, radiant rebirth, powerful transition, total transformation, conscious change, new belief systems, and absolute release.
Low Energy: Paralyzing fear of change, confronting mortality, feeling hopeless, actively resisting necessary transitions, repeating negative loops, or unnecessary delays.
The Medicine: Death brings a potent message of change: a major cycle is concluding, and you must close that old door completely so a new one can open. It is the sacred work of putting the past behind us, allowing us to focus our energy entirely on what is rising on the horizon. As a death doula, I know that our final transition is not an ending to be feared, but a threshold into a new state of love.
The Death Mantra: "I release the past with gratitude to make space for the beauty rising on my new horizon."
🎨 Card 14: Temperance
Temperance signifies profound balance, soulful moderation, endless patience, and universal harmony. The card features an angel carefully pouring water between two cups, representing the alchemical blending of opposing forces into a new, perfect solution, achieving emotional calm and choosing the middle path.
High Energy: Complete balance, harmony, deep tranquility, absolute peace, conscious moderation, serene patience, blending energies, a sacred promise, and trust in divine timing.
Low Energy: Imbalance, excess, extremes, reckless disharmony, impatience, and spiritual misalignment.
The Medicine: When Temperance flows into your reading, she is telling you to find your center, practice moderation, and avoid risky extremes. She asks you to be patient, stay grounded, and blend the contrasting energies in your situation rather than rushing or overindulging. Trust that divine timing is perfectly supporting your transition.
Temperance’s Mantra: "I blend the light and the shadow within me, achieving perfect harmony through patience and peace."
